Job Position: Senior Laboratory Technician

Permanent, Full time, 20 days holiday plus statutory holidays

Purpose

The job involves in a variety of laboratory-based processes, including receiving and analyzing samples, executing laboratory testing according to standard procedures and Work Instructions. It will involve mentoring junior laboratory technicians. Providing all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively, while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

 

Essential Functions to be Successful in this Position (weighted)

1) Laboratory procedures 60%

Carry out molecular biological techniques such as biological sample authorization, blood quality control, 3C DNA extractions, DNA quantification and normalisation, PCR, and qPCR, following standard operational procedures.

Performing project-based work in determined time phrase to ensure that all work for specific projects is performed either alone or as part of a team.

Communicate actively with the rest of the team to divide a task or support others.

Communicate laboratory results in written and verbal form.

Ensure laboratory cleanliness and tidiness. Involved in calibrating and maintaining equipment and recording data (e.g., temperatures).

Ability to work under time pressures and flexible to meet changing business requirements.

Has experience or the ability to gain an understanding of general laboratory practice and safety regulations in laboratory areas.

Helping to keep a record of laboratory consumables and sample usage. Embrace new procedures and any changes to the current ones.

 

2) Documentation Procedures 30%

Assisting in the preparation for experiments and other laboratory-based work, and the preparation of all associated documentation required for experimental, regulatory and certification purposes.

Maintaining laboratory safety standards and working practices, and the development and implementation of improved working practices

Update SOPs and Work Instructions as required.

Assisting Project Managers in project documentation and recording changes.

 

3) Supervisory/ Mentoring Procedures 10%

Experienced in molecular biological procedures and able to disseminate these procedures to junior staff. Able to solve queries/issues, and introduce process improvements

 

Background

·      Candidates will be BSc educated or equivalent in a biological science related subject and have an interest and good knowledge of molecular biology.

·      A minimum of 2-4 years laboratory experience.

·      Experience of supervisory roles an advantage.

·      Very organized and able to use databases for work processes.

·      Confident user of standard IT packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.)

·      Knowledge of microarray procedures and or liquid handling robotics an advantage

·      Excellent written and oral communication skills
